Armor Wear Plates – Dynamic Armor 500

Dynamic Armor 500 steel is a medium-carbon, low alloy, quenched and tempered steel amor wear plate product achieving a minimum of 477-520 Brinell hardness (BNH). The material is capable of meeting the requirements of MIL-DTL-46100E and a number of commercial armor specifications.

Formability

This material will withstand up to 4*t (up to 0.3125 » thick) and 6*t (0.3126 – 0.500 » thick) bending; however, larger bend radiuses are recommended to reduce the effect of cold working and highly localized residual stresses associated with bending.

Weldability

Dynamic Armor 500 could be welded by common welding methods for high-strength medium-carbon steels. Appropriate heat input controls should be used to prevent localized overheating. Preheating (although not required) can be done to eliminate surface moisture and to reduce thermal gradient. Preheat temperatures should not exceed 400°F to avoid “softening” of Dynamic Armor 500 steel plates.

Ballistic Performance

Dynamic Armor 500 typically exceeds the required minimum velocity of MIL-DTL-46100E by 100 – 150 feet per second. In the appropriate thicknesses, Dynamic Armor 500 steel meets various protection levels of NIJ & EN 1063, and UL 752.
